Texts from the Qur’aan and Sunnah warning against killing and suicide

1) “O you who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves unjustly except it be a trade amongst you, by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you”

Surah an-Nisa (4):29

2) “Because of that We ordained for the Children of Israel that if anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land – it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind”

Surah Al-Ma’idah (5):32

3) “And do not kill anyone whose killing Allah has forbidden except for a just cause.”

Surah Al-Isra (17):33

4) Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه‏) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

“Whoever purposefully throws himself from a mountain and kills himself, will be in the (Hell) Fire falling down into it and abiding therein perpetually forever; and whoever drinks poison and kills himself with it, he will be carrying his poison in his hand and drinking it in the (Hell) Fire wherein he will abide eternally forever; and whoever kills himself with an iron weapon, will be carrying that weapon in his hand and stabbing his abdomen with it in the (Hell) Fire wherein he will abide eternally forever.”

5) ‘Abdullah (رضي الله عنه‏) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

“The blood of a Muslim who confesses that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that I am His Apostle, cannot be shed except in three cases; In Qisas for murder, a married person who commits illegal sexual intercourse and the one who reverts from Islam (apostate) and leaves the Muslims.”

6) ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr (رضي الله عنه‏) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

“Whoever killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims, shall not smell the smell of Paradise though its smell is perceived from a distance of forty years.”

7) Ibn ‘Umar (رضي الله عنه‏) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

“During some of the Ghazawat (battles) of Allah’s Messenge, a woman was found killed, so Allah’s messenger forbade the killing of women and children.”
