The Haa’iyyah Poem of Ibn Abee Daawood (d.316)

This is a famous poem by the son of Abee Daawood (rahimahullaah), the famous hadith scholar. It contains illustrious points concerning the correct Islaamic ‘Aqeedah.

The poem is 33 verses long, with the full text presented below (taken from http://www.troid.ca and translated by Brother Moosaa Richardson) :

1) Hold tightly to the rope of Allaah and the guidance,
And do not be an innovator, so that you might be successful.

(2) And practice your religion based on the Book of Allaah and the Sunan which
have come from the Messenger of Allaah so you will be saved and earn reward.

(3) And say: Not a created thing is the Speech of our great King,
Such was the religious position of the pious ones (before us) which they clearly expressed.

(4) And do not be a person who takes no position on the Quran,
As did the followers of Jahm, and they had been too lax (to take the right position).

(5) And do not say that the Quran is created, meaning: its recitation,
Since the Speech of Allaah, through its recitation, is made clear.

(6) And say: Allaah will make himself visible to the creation, openly,
Just as the full moon is not hard to see, and your Lord (will be seen) more clearly.

(7) And He was not born, nor has He fathered anyone,
Nor is there anything similar to Him, exalted be the Glorified One.

(8) A Jahmee rejects this, however, we have
As a testimony to the truth of what we say – a hadeeth that clarifies it.

(9) Jareer narrated it, from the words of Muhammad,
So say what he said about that, and you will be successful.

(10) And certainly a Jahmee will deny His Right Hand as well,
While both of His Hands are giving out all kinds of bounties.

(11) And say: The Ever-Compelling descends each night,
Without asking how, magnificent is the One God and most worthy of praise.

(12) Down to the lowest heaven, granting bounties from His Grace,
As the gates of the heavens are opened and spread widely.

(13) He says: Is there anyone seeking forgiveness who would like to meet a Forgiver?
Or anyone seeking bounties of goodness and provisions, so he could be given (what he requests)?

(14) A group have reported this whose reports are not to be rejected,
But sadly some have went wrong and did not believe them, marring themselves.

(15) And say: Indeed the best of the people after Muhammad
Were his two deputies of old, and then ‘Uthmaan, according to the most correct position.

(16) And the fourth of them was the best of creation after them,
‘Alee, the companion of goodness, through goodness he was successful.

(17) Those are the people, those who we have no doubt about,
Upon the great camels of Firdows, shining brightly and roaming about.

(18) Sa’eed, Sa’d, Ibn ‘Awf, Talhah,
Aamir of Fihr, and Zubayr the praiseworthy.

(19) And speak with the best terms about the Companions, all of them,
And do not be one who speaks ill of them, pointing out their faults and criticizing,

(20) Since the clear Revelation has spoke of their excellence,
And in (Soorah) al-Fath are verses about the Companions, praising them.

(21) And regarding the pre-ordained Qadr, be convinced, since it is
The pillar that combines many affairs of the Religion, and the Religion encompasses much.

(22) And do not reject, out of ignorance, (belief in) Nakeer and Munkar,
Or the Pool or the Scales, surely you are being advised sincerely.

(23) And say: Allaah, the Great, will remove, from of His Grace,
Out of the Fire, people, burned severely, who will then be tossed

(24) Into the river in Firdows, wherein they will regain life by its water,
Like a seed taken by a flood that comes and wipes things away with its abundant water.

(25) And surely, the Messenger of Allaah will intercede for the creation.
And speak about the punishment of the grave, that it is the truth, made clear.

(26) And do not make takfeer of those who pray, even if they commit sins,
Since all of them commits sins, while the Owner of the Throne forgives graciously.

(27) And do not hold a belief like that of the Khawaarij, for it is
A position held by only those who desire it, and it is destructive and disgraceful.

(28) And do not be a Murji’, one who plays games with his religion,
Surely, the Murji’ is joking about the religion (ie. not taking it seriously).

(29) And say: Eemaan (faith) consists of statements, intentions (i.e. belief of the heart)
And Actions, according to the explicit statement of the Prophet.

(30) And it decreases sometimes, due to disobedience, and sometimes
Because of obedience it grows, and on the Scale it will outweigh (other things).

(31) And keep yourself from the opinions of people and their stances,
Since the stance of the Messenger of Allaah is more befitting and comforting to the chest.

(32) And do not be from those who play games with their religion,
Attacking the people of hadeeth and reviling them.

(33) If you keep the belief contained within this poem all your life, O my companion,
You will be upon goodness, day and night.

The following is a small excerpt of the poem from the book Trials of Life by Sheikh Saalih Fawzan al-Fawzan. The words of Al-Imam Abu Muhammad Abdullaah ibn Muhammad Al-Andulusi Al-Qahtaani Al-Maaliki (rahimahullaah):

O Ash’ariya have you come to realise that I am
the dust in your eyes and the itchiness of your eyelids
I am an ulcer in the liver of the Ash’aree
I increase in size until I fight everyone who hates me
I have become apparent and excelled over the heads of your teachers
And have defeated everyone who sought (to defeat) me
And I have turned their arguments upside down and have scattered them
And I found them to be statements without proof
Allaah aided me and has made my proofs firm
And Allaah has saved me from their doubts
…And I have held firmly to the rope of the legislation of Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم)
And have bitten onto it (the sunnah) with my molar teeth
Have you come to realise O Ash’ariya that I am
A raging storm (against you) and what kind of storm that is?
I am your concern, I am your grief, am your sickness
I am your poison in secret and in open

Excerpt 2

“And Allaah is the greatest, apparent, nothing is above Him;

And the affair of Allaah is the greatest affair.

And Allaah is greater than His Throne, He encompasses the heavens, the earth and the Kursee which possesses pillars.

Likewise, the Kursee has encompassed the seven levels

(of the heavens) and the earths with evidence.

And Allaah is above the Throne and the Kursee;

The thoughts of mankind are not hidden from Him.

Do not contain Him in a place when you say,

“Our Lord is true in every place.”

You have freed Him from His Throne due to your ignorance.

And you have contained Him in another place.

Do not deny His existence by your statement,

“He is not inside us, nor is He outside the universes.”

Allaah is the greatest, He uncovers what you have hidden;

And He is the one who spreads it to those who have eyes.

And Allaah is the greatest, He is free from resemblance (tashbeeh);

And free from likening (tamtheel) and from

Denial (ta’teel) which all amount to disbelief.”

Ibn Qudamah’s poetry Allaah’s ‘Uluww (Transcendence)

Imam ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi (d.620H) eloquently and poetically said:

Allah described Himself with al-‘Uluww fi’s-Sama

And He was described with this by the seal of the Anbiya,

And this was agreed upon by all of the ‘Ulama – from the pious Sahabah and fuqaha,

Narrations have been reported about this with yaqeen

And these have been accepted in hearts of the Muslimeen,

And this is a naturally instinctive belief in all creation,

So when a calamity befalls them they look to the heavens and raise their hands making supplications,

And they wait for succour to arrive from the Creator of creations,

And they pronounce this upon their tongues,

And this is only rejected by an extremist innovator, who is steeped in his deviance,

Or one tested by uncritical following of him in his misguidance.

Ibn Qayyim’s poem, O Christ-Worshippers!

Ibn Qayyim also wrote a famous qasidah, entitled Ayobbad al-Maseeh Fi Naqd al-Nasraniyyah (O Christ-Worshippers! In Refuting Christianity):


اعباد المسيح لنا سؤال….نريد جوابه ممن و عاه

O Christ-worshippers! We want an answer to our question [from your wise ones],


إذا مات الإله بصنع قوم….أماتوه فما هذا الإله

If the Lord was murdered by some people’s act, what kind of god is this?


وهل أرضاه ما نالوه منه….فبشراهم إذا نلوا رضاه

We wonder! Was He pleased by what they did to Him?
If yes, blessed be they, they achieved His pleasure,


وإن الذي فعلوه فيه….فقؤتهم إذا أوهت قواه

But if He was discontented, this means their power had subjugated Him!

 


وهل بقي الوجود بلا إله….سميع يستجيب لمن دعاه

Was the whole entity left without a Sustainer, so who answered the prayers?


وهل خلت الطباق السبع لما….ثوى تحت التراب وقد علاه

Were the heavens vacated, when He laid under the ground somewhere?


وهل خلت العوالم من إله….يدبر ها وقد سمرت يداه

Were all the worlds left without a God, to manage while His hands were nailed?


وكيف تخلت الأملاك عنه….بنصرهم وقد سمعوا بكاه

Why did not the angels help Him, when they heard him while he wailed?

 


وكيف أطاقت الخشبات حمل الإله….الحق شد على قفاه

How could the rods stand to bear the True Lord when He was fastened,


وكيف دنا الحديد إليه حتى….يخالطه ويلحقه أذاه

How could the irons reached Him and [had] His body pinned?


وكيف تمكنت أيدي عداه….وطالت حيث قد صفعوا قفاه

How could His enemies hands reach Him and slap His rear,


وهل عاد المسيح إلى حياة….أم المحيي له ربٌ سواه

And was Christ revived by himself, or was the Reviver another god?

 


ويا عجبا لقبر ضم رباً….وأغجب منه بطن قد حواه

What a sight it was, a grave that enclosed a god,
Stranger still is the belly that confined Him!


أقام هناك تسعا من شهور….لدى الظلمات من حيض غذاه

He stayed there for nine months in utter darkness, fed by blood!


وشق الفرج مولودا صغيرا….ضعيفا فاتحا للثدى فاه

Then he got out of the womb as a small baby,
Weak and gasping to be breast-fed!


ويأكل ثم يشرب ثم ياتي….بلازم ذاك هل هذا إله

He ate and drank, and did what that naturally resulted,
Is this [what you call] a god?


تعالى الله عن إفك النصارى….سيسأل كلهم عما افتراه

High Exalted be Allah above the lies of Christians,
All of them will be held accountable for their libels!

 


أعباد الصليب لأي معنى….يعظم او يقبَه رماه

O Cross-worshippers! For what reason is this exalted
and blame [is cast upon those] who reject it?


وهل تقضى العقول بغير كسر….وإحراق له ولمن بغاه

Is it not logical to break and burn it, along with the one who innovated it?


إذا ركب الإله عليه كرها….وقد شدت لتسمير يداه

Since the Lord was crucified on it, and his hands were fastened to it?


فذاك المركب الملعون حقا….فدسه لا تبسه إذا تراه

That is really a cursed cross to carry,
So discard it, do not kiss it!

 


يهان عليه رب الخلق طرًا….وتعبده فإنك من عداه

The Lord was abused on it, and you adore it?
So [it is clear that] you are one of His enemies!


فإن عظمته من أخل أن قد….حوى رب العباد وقد علاه

If you extol it because it carried the Lord of the Worlds,


وقد فقد الصليب فإن رأينا….له شكلا تذكرنا سناه

Why don’t you prostrate yourself and worship graves,


فهلا للقبور سجدت طرًا….لضم القبر ربَك في حشاه

Since the grave contained your god in it?

 


فيا عبد المسيح فق فهذا….بدايته وهذا منتهاه

So Christ-worshipper, open your eyes,
This is the Beginning and this is the End.

Miscellaneous

1. Knowledge, Taqwa and Patience
Muhammad bin Abee ‘Alee Al-Asbahaanee recited to some of them:

“Act upon your knowledge and you will profit, O man

Knowledge doesn’t benefit so long as one doesn’t perfect his actions

Knowledge is beauty and Taqwaa (Fear) of Allaah is its decoration

Those with Taqwaa are always preoccupied with their knowledge

The proof of Allaah, O possessor of knowledge, is immense

Neither plotting nor scheming concerning it is of any use

Acquire knowledge and perform deeds as much as you can

And do not let vain pastimes and argumentation distract you

Team the people and always make it your goal to benefit them

And beware, beware of fatigue and weariness overtaking you

Admonish your brother with gentleness when he makes a mistake

For knowledge is affectionate with those who are overcome by errors

And if you are amidst a people that have no religious morals

Then command them to do good when they act ignorantly (i.e. sin)

And if they disobey you, then remind them without getting annoyed

And be patient, strive in patience and do not let their actions worry you

For every goat is attached to its two feet

Have patience whether they are oppressive or fair.”

2. The days are a witness against you and following up evil deeds with good deeds

Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Rizq informed us, saying: ‘Uthmaan bin Ahmad Ad-Daqaaq reported to us: Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Al-Baraa’ narrated to us, saying: ‘Abdullaah bin Muhammad Al-Ash’aree Al-Madeenee recited to me these poetic verses from Mahmood:

“Your yesterday has passed on as a just witness

And you have come upon a day which is (also) a witness against you

So if yesterday you committed an evil deed

Then follow that up with two good deeds, and you will be praiseworthy

Do not put aside doing a good deed today for tomorrow

For perhaps tomorrow will come, yet you no longer

If you find fault with your today, its benefit will come back to you

But as for what you did yesterday, that will not come back to you.”

3. “…opinion is (like) night and hadeeth is (like) day.”

Al-Khateeb Al-Baghdaadee (d. 463H) cites an isnaad going back to ‘Ubaidah ibn Ziyaad who said, (in some lines of poetry):

“The Religion of the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is narrations,

And what a blessed means to an end the Aathaar are for a youth.

So do not forsake the hadeeth nor its people,

Because opinion is (like) night and hadeeth is (like) day.

And perchance a youth may err upon the Path of Guidance,

But the Sun is rising in splendour and has much light.”

4. Poetry in Rebuke of the One who Opposes the Hadeeth with Opinions

Al-Khateeb Al-Baghdaadee (d. 463H) cites an isnaad going back to Aboo ‘Abdillaah Muhammad ibn ‘Alee as-Suwaree that he said (in some lines of poetry):

“Say to the one who opposes the hadeeth and sets out

discrediting its people and those who claim it,

‘Are you saying that which you are saying based upon knowledge, my son?

Or upon ignorance? For indeed ignorance is a character of the foolish.

Does one discredit those who have protected the religion

From falsehood and misrepresentation?

And to their statements and to that which they narrated

Returns every scholar and jurist.”

Six Principles in a Poem

Shaykh Zayd Ibn Muhammad ad-Madhkhalee in his book, al-Mandhoomaatul-Hassaan fil-’Aqaa‘id wal-Manaahij wa Qutoof min ’Uloomil-Qur‘aan (p. 43):

‘And listen to the principles formulated by some of the Salaf.
The revelation came with them by way of those who proceeded.
The first of them is sincerity – O reasonable one,
it was brought by the Qur‘aan and the beloved,
Muhammad, the guide, the great Prophet.
He was sent by my Lord, the Sublime, the Honourable.
The opposite of sincerity is objectionable Shirk,
And how many of its manifestations have not been rejected.
So seek them O brother in eemaan,
From the Sunnah of the guide along with the Qur‘aan.
Then there was unity along with harmony,
A clear extending text came with it.
And its opposite is a dangerous evil for you,
My Lord the Exalted explained it so understand,
In Aali-’Imraan it came clearly,
And its like came in al-Anfaal, so understand O youth.
And in Sooratur-Room there came a warning,
From every party that was rebuked by the all-Mighty.
The third was to listen and obey the one who,
Has been granted authority, order to beware of the trials.
So how many reports have come, which obligate
Obedience to the ruler with a condition so know it well.
I am referring to goodness that has been recorded by the Sharee’ah.
And its opposite is the objectionable affair. Indeed, it will not be accepted.
And the fourth is knowledge that my Lord the Exalted has favoured the Scholars from the sky.
So whoever desired to attain their excellence,
Then let him traverse the Straight Path like them.
And whosoever shows enmity towards a Scholar who acts,
Upon his knowledge in truth, then that one has been tried,
With war from my Lord, since it has been decreed.
And his defeat by the Compeller has been validated by the informant.
And the fifth is loving all of the awliyaa‘,
From those who believe in Allaah and then observe taqwaa.
They are those whom my Lord has specified with a truthful promise,
About His abode of the Hereafter, the station of those who observe taqwaa.
This is not the case of one who merely speaks about the reality of the walee,
From the aspect of the truth and the sent guidance.
Rather, this one has lied. Rather, he has fabricated.
Indeed, the revelation and the manhaj of the warner have declared war upon him.
And the sixth is certain and exemplary knowledge,
That my Lord with regards to the close friend, Messenger,
And recipient of His clear Book guides to the truth and a plain light.
And whosoever says that the Book and the Sunan,
Their knowledge is trivial, such that he turns away from them,
Then that one is a heretic and he is submersed in trials,
Due to the objectionable statement and his plain lie,
Upon everyone religious person who is learned concerning the Qur‘aan
And has practiced the magnificent truth as his Religion,
In front of Allaah, my Lord, besides whom there is no other deity,
The Sublime, the Mighty and Exalted in Might.
O Lord, grant us the success to preserve the sunan,
And allow us to perform many good and excellent works.
We hope for a reward, along with Your endless pleasure.
And pardon us always and forever.
And send peace – O Lord – upon the Prophet,
And the Family and the Companions and likewise those who have observed taqwaa.
Along with that, send salutations that fill whatever is between the heavens,
And your earth. This is it, so actualize it and learn it.’
